Press release: Internet titans back artificial intelligence startup Vicarious Systems

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. Feb 7, Vicarious Systems, Inc., (www.vicariousinc.com), a startup developing artificial intelligence software, today announced its first institutional venture investment. Leading the round is Founders Fund (FF), investors behind such contrarian technology companies as Facebook and SpaceX. Also participating are Felicis Ventures (investors in Mint.com, ImageShack), Dustin Moskovitz (co-founder of Facebook, Asana), Adam D’Angelo (co-founder of Quora, former CTO of Facebook), and Joe Lonsdale (co-founder of Palantir, Addepar).

“If we can build true artificial intelligence, it will change the world more than any previous technology,” said Luke Nosek, partner at Founders Fund. “There have been a lot of broken promises in this field, but we can’t succeed without having courage to take risks,” added Moskovitz.

Vicarious Systems is developing algorithms that mimic the function of the human brain. The startup’s first technology is a vision system that understands the contents of images and videos the way humans do. Vicarious Systems co-founder D. Scott Brown said, “This investment enables us to move aggressively towards our 5 year goal of human-level object recognition. We’re honored to be part of the Founders Fund family.” Vicarious Systems co-founder Dr. Dileep George added, “Founders Fund is unique; they understand deep technology, refuse to exploit founders, and have a consistent track record of long term, ultra high payoff bets. Some past FF investments have created whole industries, and we hope we can continue that legacy.” Vicarious Systems aims to automate pattern recognition and reconstruction in domains like image and video search, medical image analysis, gaming, robotics, surveillance, navigation, and geo-spatial image analysis.

Leading Founders Fund’s investment in the company is Brian Singerman, who said, “Vicarious Systems’ unique approach represents an important building block towards creating artificial general intelligence. The AI field is seeing a new renaissance, and we look forward to making many more investments in AI startups in the future.”
